Abutilon Seed germination and cultural information.

Plant type: Tender perennial

Uses: Pot plant, Containers

Plant height: 45 cm

Sowing: Sow in spring.

20 ºC. Cover with a thin layer of Vermiculite

Germination in 2-3 weeks.

Approximate crop timing (mid season)

Sowing to transplanting 4 - 5 weeks

Sowing to flowering 14 -16 weeks

 

Growing on:

Temperature 14 – 17 ºC at night with 17 – 20 ºC during the day. Temperatures below 15 ºC can cause reduced growth or longer crop time.

pH 5.5 - 6.0

Feeding Feed every other watering. Use a fertiliser with most of the nitrogen in nitrate

form. High ammonium-form nitrogen will promote excessive leaf growth, which will hide the flowers.

Pinching Pinching is not needed.

Growth regulation Generally not required.

Pack/Pot size Best grown as pot plant in 10-13 cm pot

Advice Good ventilation is very important. Plants require high fertiliser levels and early

spacing. Finish in high light conditions. Time to flower is shortest under high

light levels.

Common diseases Rhizoctonia root and stem rot. Pythium root rot and Botrytis blight.
