Used for about 5,000 years in Chinese Medicine a highly regarded Oriental medicine. Believed to be Hardiness Zone 6. Ginseng is a tonic herb that stimulates the nervous system and relaxes it. Lowers blood sugar levels, lowers cholesterol levels and increases disease resistance. As with all herbs, medicinal advice should be sought before using. Excess use causes problems and the amount of time you should take the herb for is also restricted. Perennial, height up to 90cm and spread of up to 75cm. Rootstock is used for herbal medicine fresh or dried. Harvested during the autumn from 6-7 year old plants. Prefers a woodland condition, moist humus rich soil in semi shade to full shade. Sow in shaded cold frame spring and autumn, or indoors and refrigerate, requires warmth 16-20ºC for 20 weeks followed by 30 weeks 2-5ºC seed is slow and erratic to germinate, grow on in shade in cold frame, tunnel or greenhouse for first winter.
