An unusually attractive species, unique by being 1st. year flowering and by its very long flowering period May to September.
Hardy perennial, capable of flowering the first year from seed, a unique feature for a Columbine, growing 60-80 cm (24-32") tall, stems well-branched. Flowers nodding, 5 cm (2") in diameter bright red to copper-red, orange with golden yellow centres, produced in profusion at the end of the branches.

Sowing
Sow seeds from early spring in seed trays or April-June in seed bed. Prick out. Plant out in final quarters at a distance of 25-30 cm (10-12"). If sown early, will flower the first  summer and fall. Thrives in any kinds of soil. Will flower for 2-3 years.

History
Brought into cultivation as early as 1865. Since forgotten until very recently with the re-introduction of this selected new strain.

The cultural information should be used as a guide only, I have found a number of different sowing techniques for the same seed from different sources there does not seem to be a standard. With this in mind you should use this website as a guide only, you probably already have a tried and tested way of sowing different seeds. As a rule of thumb the larger the seed size the more cover it requires, and fine seed like Lobelia Begonia etc requires no cover.
