A native perennial. Climbs up to 9m supports itself by twinning around other plants. Prefers sun or semi-shade. Flowers and leaves are scented
Dried flowering heads (female plants) used as a flavouring and preservative in beer. Young leaves can be added to salads or young leaves and shoots cooked and the flavour is said to be unique and delicious. A tea is made from the leaves and cones, dried hops are also added to sleep pillows. Sow spring onwards in a cold frame, transplant into pots and plant out early summer or the following spring. Flowers are harvested in the autumn, young shoots harvested for culinary use in the spring.

The cultural information should be used as a guide only, I have found a number of different sowing techniques for the same seed from different sources there does not seem to be a standard. With this in mind you should use this website as a guide only, you probably already have a tried and tested way of sowing different seeds. As a rule of thumb the larger the seed size the more cover it requires, and fine seed like Lobelia Begonia etc requires no cover.
