Hop Common Humulus lupulus Perennial 50+ seeds Zone 5 A native perennial. Climbs up to 9m supports itself by twinning around other plants. Prefers sun or semi-shade. Flowers and leaves are scented Dried flowering heads (female plants) used as a flavouring and preservative in beer. Young leaves can be added to salads or young leaves and shoots cooked and the flavour is said to be unique and delicious. A tea is made from the leaves and cones, dried hops are also added to sleep pillows. Sow spring onwards in a cold frame, transplant into pots and plant out early summer or the following spring. The cultural information should be used as a guide only, I have found a number of different sowing techniques for the same seed from different sources there does not seem to be a standard. With this in mind you should use this website as a guide only, you probably already have a tried and tested way of sowing different seeds. As a rule of thumb the larger the seed size the more cover it requires, and fine seed like Lobelia Begonia etc requires no cover.
